THERE was a sombre atmosphere at his favourite hang out, Copacabana Beach tonight as more than a hundred young people gathered to mark their respects to the Australian teenager who died in Bali yesterday.Sixteen-year-old Jack McCabe from Avoca Beach on the NSW central coast is believed to have drowned while snorkeling off Nusa Dua yesterday.
At a memorial for him this
afternoon some of his friends cried, others hugged and many simply stood around unsure of what to do - the overwhelming sentiment was one of utter shock and disbelief.
"He was a heaps good bloke," childhood friend and classmate Dane Green, 16, said.
"Everyone liked him, he was the best person ... He loved the beach."
Jack had only just got his Learner's licence and was looking forward to leaving school at the end of the year to begin a plumbing apprenticeship with his father John.
"I've got a video of him driving in his mother's car on his first lesson, I've watched it like a million times today," one girl said.
Classmate Liam Williams, 15, had known Jack since they were in primary school and said other Year 10 students at Kincumber High School yesterday put up tributes around the school.
They were also offered counselling.
"He played soccer for Avoca and loved bodyboarding," Liam said.
"He was always out spear fishing."
As the sun set the group moved down to the sand to sit around a fire.
Despite being told at an assembly what happened there remained a degree of uncertainty among his peers as to how Jack died.
Some believed he was snorkeling and hit his head while others were convinced he was scuba diving.
His tragic death occurred only six months after 18-year-old Jake Flannery died of electrocution after touching an electricity box in Kuta, Bali
